LGBTQI+ Equality

Characteristic Specific Sessions

LGBTQI+ advocates have developed our LGBTQI+ Equality course to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to promote equality, safety, inclusion, and respect for individuals belonging to the diverse group often referred to as "LGBTQI+".

The session can include the following (depending on session length):

  • The history and the current issues facing the LGBTQ+ community in the UK (and abroad if appropriate for your organisation)
  • The impact of discrimination and bias
  • How to promote LGBTQI+ equality in different settings, including the workplace, education, and healthcare
  • LGBTQI+ identities
  • Terminology
  • The impact of discrimination on LGBTQI+ individuals' including mental and physical health
  • How to recognise and address heteronormativity and unconscious bias concerning the LGBTQI+ group
  • Relevant legislation and policy, including the Equality Act and the Public Sector Equality Duty (if appropriate).

Participants will reflect on some lived experiences of individuals belonging to the LGBTQI+ group and gain practical strategies for promoting inclusivity, demonstrating allyship and challenging discrimination.  Through this session, individuals can develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become effective advocates for LGBTQI+ rights, working towards creating an organisation where all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feel valued and respected.
