Unconscious Bias Doesn't Make Decisions — Leaders Do

Conversations about unconscious bias often focus on one question:

"How do we eliminate bias?"

The honest answer is that we probably can't.

Bias is part of being human. Our brains constantly take shortcuts to help us process information quickly.

The more useful question is this: How do we stop bias influencing important decisions?

That's where leadership matters.

Recruitment, promotion, disciplinary action, performance reviews and restructuring all involve judgement. Left unchecked, unconscious assumptions can influence who we trust, who we mentor, whose mistakes we notice and whose potential we recognise.

But bias doesn't remove responsibility.

Good leaders don't simply hope they'll be objective. They build systems that make better decisions more likely.

They slow down important decisions.

They seek evidence before reaching conclusions.

They invite challenge from colleagues with different perspectives.

They ask whether they would make the same decision if the individual sitting opposite them were someone else.

Inclusive leadership isn't about becoming bias-free. It's about recognising that every one of us has taken in (often without question) the many messages we receive and designing decision-making processes that stop the potentially unfair outcomes.

What safeguards does your organisation have in place to help leaders make fair, evidence-based decisions?

Ultimately, organisations aren't judged by whether bias exists.

They're judged by whether leadership can recognise it, manage it and make decisions that are fair, evidence-based and defensible.

That's a much more achievable goal.
